Last weekend, on my way back from Charlotte, I took the opportunity to swing by the outskirts of Chester. My goal was to visit the site of the historic Pryor Colored School, built ca. 1898. This old school is very easy to find-- it sits at the top of a roadside embankment off of Lancaster Highway. Though I did not dare to trespass inside the school, I did take the liberty of walking around the building to take photos. The land is privately owned and I will be contacting the owner shortly to gain permission to investigate further. I am pleased to share some of the photos with you:

Haley,
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you are still interested in looking as much as you like at The Pryor Schoolhouse in Chester, but we'd be delighted to have you come. My husband, Alex Oliphant owns the sweet little schoolhouse. He has apparently reached out to appropriate showcases to which he could move the schoolhouse and protect it.
My name is Laura Oliphant. My husband has asked that you contact him via his email:aoliphant@truvista.net. I'm sure he would be glad to talk with you.
I hope it was moved somewhere safely, otherwise it's gone now. I was terrified when I saw a bulldozer next to it. It was something I looked forward to seeing every time I drive to visit my mom and brother in Chester. Now, I try not to look at where it used to be.
